Father's Day, Today & Big Red, Birdsville

The alarm went off early for a Sunday, it was Fathers Day and the kids were excited about being a part of a Today Show live cross. They had met Emma Freedman, the weekend weather girl the day before at the Birdsville Races and she'd told them to be outside the pub by around 9:15am for the cross.
So Richard was given his fathers day presents, a new RM Williams travel bag and a Birdsville Races T-shirt and stubby holder.

We arrived in town early and had some brekky with our camp neighbours Gerry & Ann, David & Barbera who had also come into town to see the kids live cross....

The kids also got to meet The Roulette's, the pilots involved in the air show at the Races.

Before long the kids were all in position, ready for their first live cross. They smiled on queue and Jack wished Nonno & Pop a Happy Father's Day back in Perth. It was a memorable moment for the kids and for their proud parents....

....smile....action!!!!
We then said thanks to Emma and the crew...
Bye Emma, thanks for being so gorgeous.
...and headed off towards Big Red, a huge red sand dune in the middle of the Simpson Desert.
Big Red

The colour contrasts between a lake at its base and the red sand, would make it an artists and photographers dream. It was also an area that attracted all the hoons who were putting their 4WD's and motorbikes through their paces trying to make it up Big Red.... It was quite entertaining!

We decided instead, to walk up the dune. The view from the top was beautiful.. One side was the Simpson Desert, while the other side had the inland lake.

We then headed back into town, we laughed when we saw this sign, heading into the desert...
You would need a dare to do it

When we got back into Birdsville the Sunday Session at the pub was in full swing which is where I left Richard and our camp neighbours Gerry & Ann.

I went home to the caravan with the kids and pottered, trying to get Internet service to post the blogs. It's been really frustrating, and although I had better service than I had been able to get, it still wasn't great. The blog would have to wait until we got back to civilization.

I finally managed to get Richard home from the Birdsville Sunday Session by around 6ish and we set up a campfire with both neighbours, Gerry & Ann, David & Barbera.
It was a great evening of chats and laughs. It would go down as one of the friendliest free camp we have ever stayed in and we really enjoyed getting to meet some more beautiful people and it was a joy to share the Birdsville experience with them.

  2. Good to be back on line Noels. Yes, he can mix it with everyone that's for sure... from royalty to the rugged outback, my husband manages to find a mate or two where ever he is. I had Richard's Dad and my brother both record the segment so we are sure to get a copy. It was very exciting for them. Who said I am not a nutcase haha....
Love you lots and miss you lots,
    Sonia xo
