Melbourne Cup, Bali style & Topsy Turvy Xmas Cards

Sunday the 4th of November... and after saying goodbye to the Magic team, Richard and I headed back to Villa Hai where the kids were waiting for us.
It wasn't long before the boys had Richard on the bike, taking them for a ride, they had missed him...
The boys, back on the scooter

It was a lazy afternoon and we all ended up at the Canggu Club with Ron & Lee and Uncle Rob (Lee's brother) and Aunty Anne, who are holidaying with Ron and Lee.
The kids had a swim while the adults sat and chatted by the pool...

Dinner was at Trattoria down the road, it was like we had never left.

Monday the 5th of November and I was up early and off to the gym before anyone was up. I took the scooter and initially felt a little unsure, but had the hang of it again in no time.
The training session in the humidity was hard work and I was very happy when the hour was up. I rode the scooter back to Villa Hai, where we all had Nasi Goreng for breakfast.

After brekky, Richard and I took off to Butter for a coffee, before heading towards a Printing shop to try to find a printer who could design and print some Christmas cards in three days. Along the way we also spotted a black flower, which Aunty Anne needed for Melbourne  Cup day.
We finally found a printer who agreed to do the job in 3 days. Fingers crossed they turn out alright.
I then went off to Putu for a massage before meeting Richard and the kids at Potato Head for the afternoon.
Chris & Aileen Marwick also met us there along with Ron, Lee, Uncle Rob & Aunty Anne.
While the adults sat and chatted over a drink the kids had a swim and then decided to do some bartering for watches and shells on the beach.

We all had a laugh when Chris sent Jack on a mission to buy him a watch.
When the kids had been missing a little too long Chris went down to check on them only to find Jack testing out a so called "waterproof watch" in the ocean.
Chris came back to tell us the story only to have Jack reappear 10minutes later with a waterproof watch for Chris which he had tested for himself... Priceless!
After all that bartering the kids were getting weary, so I returned with the kids and Aunty Anne earlier than the rest, there was a big day ahead with Melbourne Cup the next day so an early night was in order.

Tuesday the 6th of November,  everyone was up reasonably early getting organized for the race that stops a nation, Bali style.
By 10am... Richard the kids and I, along with Ron, Lee, Aunty Anne, Uncle Rob and Chris and Aileen were at Flemington, aka The Canggu Club for Melbourne Cup celebrations... it would be the first Melbourne Cup we had ever celebrated with the kids.

The kids and I, our first Melbourne Cup together

It was nice to see how much effort had been put into an Aussie event, offshore.
It was really well done, with competitions in every corner, as well as sweeps etc..

Everyone was given a glass of champas on arrival with a diamond in it, one of them was real. Lee collected our so called diamonds (glass) to take them to the jeweller when she gets a chance.

There was no luck for us in the cup itself but Ron and I had a chuckle and had to take a photo, when we were distracted from the big race by this sight on a table.
Sitting on a placemat were two packets of Marlborough Blue along with a puffer...
Irony at its best

The ladies had also gone to great lengths to dress up.  An $8000 emerald necklace up for grabs for best dressed had worked a treat. Jack, bless him, had put Nina, Lee and I down for fashions on the field, so it was a major miracle when Lee got up on stage, after a few protests, to compete in the event. No luck our end in the fashion stakes either, but we had lots of fun...

There were even horses on the oval which, being the only kids around, Jack Harry and Nina were allowed to go for a ride, the horse's name was ChaCha...

A fashion parade showcased local Bali businesses which was also well done but then gave the kids an idea... To try their own modelling talents.
So up and down the runway they went for most of the afternoon much to the crowds amusement....

Tired, hot and sweaty but grateful for a wonderful day we left the Canggu Club late afternoon and headed back to Villa Hai with one thing in mind... to strip down get our  bathers on and go for a refreshing swim, which is exactly what we all did.

Wednesday the 7th of November and after a big day the day before, everyone was content to have a sleep in.
We woke to find that plans were in full swing to go shopping, so the kids were off with Ron & Lee and Uncle Rob & Aunty Anne for the day.
Richard and I were left wondering what to do with ourselves, but not for too long.
We got on the scooter and headed to Butter for a coffee and then into Seminyak to see if the Christmas cards were ready.
What a surprise when they were ready to go. I opened them to have a look and couldn't believe my eyes. In typical Bali style they had printed off hundreds of Christmas cards, upside down, topsy turvy and back to front. ... And we were leaving for the airport in 6 hours. Holy Moley!
After asking them if I was on candid camera, in which they all looked at me like I had three heads, I then asked if it was possible to redo them the right way, to be picked up by 6pm. Thank god nothing is too much trouble in Bali and after a few sledges to each other in Balinese they were busily redoing the cards.
We then headed for a drive to the Galaxy Bar to see one of Richard's mates before meeting Chris for a drink at the Champagne Bar.
We called in to the printer on the way back to Villa Hai to pick up the Christmas  cards and yes they were ready and the right way up.  We arrived back at the Villa just as everyone was returning from their day out shopping.
The kids, as usual, had been spoilt by their grandparents.
The pack up began, before we had a quick dinner and then the worst part, the goodbyes.
Everyone was teary as we got in the car, Harry especially. Thanks Pop & Huggy for looking after us again so well,  that we feel like we're at home when we are at Villa Hai.
We'll see you in a few weeks for Christmas celebrations.
The airport check in was harmless and the kids were asleep on the plane before it had left the runway. We arrived in Darwin at 3am local time.

Thursday the 8th of November, we slept until around 11am.
The unpacking and the washing began while Richard caught up on some work and the kids cleaned out the car. By  afternoon most of the chores were done and we decided to take a drive to do some grocery shopping.
Boring stuff  really, but you can tell the wet season has arrived with storms and black clouds constantly looming in the distance. The humidity makes us realize how comfortable Bali was weather-wise.
A late afternoon swim, an early dinner and we were all tucked up in bed early.
