Edge of the World and The Nut, Tasmania

Monday morning the 2nd of April was a walk on the beach at Somerset before packing up camp and heading towards Stanley, further west along the north coast.
Ron & Lee had been to Stanley last year and had told us how beautiful it was, so it was up high on our to do list.
By lunchtime we had reached Stanley, and the nut, a huge solidified lava lake that stands hundreds of metres above sea level.

The town of Stanley itself is historic and lined with little cottages filled with local produce and home wares. Touristy but beautiful!

We then continued through Smithton until we reached Stony point on the western tip of Tassie.

We set up in a free camp for the night and before long the camp fire was lit and the kids told their news by the fire before dinner and bed.

Tuesday morning the 3rd of April we woke to sunshine, a bit of a novelty during our time in Tassie.

After brekky we were planning to head south along the west coast to Arthur River and a town called "The Edge Of The World" but low and behold, the phone rang!
It was Gazza of Kath & Kim fame. He and Lloyd were on their way to visit us for the day.

After getting lost and phoning several times for directions, they arrived.... this was going to be good.

I made lunch for everyone and then the boys were off in the tinny to try their luck at fishing.

Lloyd decided to stay, he's scared of boats and the water and decided he should share with me that he "got the shits" before his trip over on the Spirit of Tasmania. Too much information!

Anyway, Lloyd helped Nina and I make rocky road and knawed our ears off about everything from his farm to his family.
A few hours of chatting and the boys were back with their catch... Barracuda and Pike.

The fishermen caught 12  - much to Jacks disgust, Harry was the fisherman of the trip, pulling in 7.

Our new found friends stayed for dinner, the smell of my pasta sauce, anchored them to their campfire seats.

After dinner the boys headed back to their caravan in Wynyard, a good 80 Kms away... no doubt we'll see them again.

Wednesday the 4th of April...Today we visited the edge of the world and the top of the world... Ok, not quite. After packing up at our campsite at Stony Point we headed down the south-west coast to the western most point of Tassie called the Edge of the World....

We had to negotiate this narrow rickety bridge to get there which had me on the edge of my seat....

Phew!! Almost across
We continued on to the historic town of Stanley for lunch and made our way to the chairlift which took us to the top of The Nut.

We took a walk around the top of the nut - The views from the top were breathtaking....

After catching the chairlift down we meandered along the streets checking out the beautiful craft shops and the local produce before visiting the seaquarium.

By afternoon we were on the road back to Devonport, where we catch the Sprit of Tasmania back to the mainland at the end of the week.  We hit a milestone on the trip to Devonport with the car clocking over 10 000 kilometres since leaving home.
Along the way we passed through a town called Penguin, with this Penguin adorning the main street...cute!
